Guided Biofilm Therapy

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a minimally invasive, thorough, and systematic addition to your professional cleaning. It is an evidence-based approach of removing the biofilm from your tooth surfaces and gum tissue that causes inflammation (gingivitis and periodontitis). Removing biofilm regularly and meticulously is essential in maintaining peak oral health. GBT is safe for all ages and around all crowns, fillings, and implants.

Using the GBT allows our hygienists to minimize the amount of time traditional manual instruments such as hand scalers are needed to remove plaque and calculus during your appointment, providing a more comfortable, gentle experience.

What to Expect:

  1. Assessment: Your hygienist evaluates the biofilm present, often using a disclosing agent to turn the plaque purple for easy oral hygiene education.
  2. Education: Your hygienist will discuss your oral hygiene habits and provide personalized recommendations and modifications to brushing and flossing based on the findings made during your assesment.
  3. AirFlow Treatment: The beginning of the GBT process. It is a combination of air, warm water, and fine powder that removes biofilm and the beginning stages of calculus up to 4mm below the gums.
  4. Piezon Scaling: The second stage of the GBT process uses Piezon ultrasonic scaling to gently remove hard calculus deposits (tartar) on the teeth that could not be removed by the AirFlow.
  5. Final check: The hygienst perfoms a final check with hand instruments to verify all biofilm and calclus deposits (tartar) have been completely removed.

Guided Biofilm Therapy offers a comfortable, comprehensive cleaning, and we are proud to offer it for our patients.
